Comparative Analysis of leveling up rules
Training?
- adnd1 ph 106 no mention
- adnd1 gm 86
- Gary's emphasis: UPWARD PROGRESS IS NEVER AUTOMATIC
- until name level:
- a tutor of the same class is required
- leveling up takes between 1 and 4 weeks of study/training and costs (level x1500) per week.
- payment in services can offset cash costs
- PCs with a great perf score can self train at double time cost. (And since cost is per time, this doubles cash requirements.)
- at name level, rules change to essentially self train and custom costs.
- bards have bonker rules
- XP stops flowing as soon as you're qualified to take training
- adnd2 ph 117: GM may require training
- adnd2 gm 71: training is now an optional rule
- tutor required, same class, higher level. (specific skills, spells, proficiencies require a tutor that knows them)
- for a PC to tutor someone, the PC must pass Wis and Cha checks. (rules are vague.)
- price is what the market will bear, but 100 per level per week is common.
- it takes 19-wisdom weeks to earn a graduation check:
- roll against the better of your int or wis. fail: train another week, but you get +1 to the graduation check per remedial week.
- hack4 ph 129 -- training is required. each week costs 1500
- PC can opt into 1 advanced course in parallel with BBI.
- fee in appendix f
- test: int-based "chance to learn" + skill's difficulty mod
- pass: gain (skill mastery die + honor die) to your skill
- fail: fees, time, and 1 point of honor wasted. (temporal or not?)
- PC can opt into prolonged training. 1500 and 1 honor per week gets you two skills' chance to learn.
- after training, you get HP and ability fraction improvements. (fractions: table11a + honor die.)
- hack4 gm p186: same as adnd1 in spirit
- XP cap rules has one extra clause: having enough XP to advance two levels is impossible; XP is deleted to just below that.
- choosing to self train doubles the XP required.
- some classes (berserker, chosen one) can't take formal training; the self training costs are already factored in to the class table.
- clarifies the ph's statement; the cost is 1500 * current level per week.
- this is the base price, some training is more or less.
- adds rules for types and qualities of schools
- see also XP costs for advancing skills NOT during leveling process in chapter 6
